So Long Old Friend

So Long Old Friend, originally uploaded by elefanterosado.

Our pet goat Walter, a five year old Nubian, lost his brave battle with life yesterday after being unable to recover from a choking episode on February 23rd. On that occasion, the vet came out to and tubed him to relieve the obstruction (possibly a piece of tree bark) in his throat. He rallied but then grew worse. The vet returned yesterday to put him down just as a snowstorm descended upon Southern Vermont.

This Wether (a neutered male goat) spent the past five years doing the job assigned to him: providing faithful friendship and company to my 19 year old Arabian mare. The two of them became like Mutt & Jeff, with Walter often behaving like an avuncular uncle or protective older brother.

On one shot I posted to Flickr of Walter lovingly contemplating a pregnant Cleo, I joked that he seemed pretty sure he was the inter species father of her foal. To which one commenter quipped memorably: “We can always dream Walter.”

Walter was buried next to his old friend and arch rival Claude, another Nubian we purchased along with Walter from a farm in Guilford, Vermont.

R.I.P. old boy.
