Portrait of Migrant Farm Workers

Portrait of Migrant Farm Workers, originally uploaded by elefanterosado.

When I hopped between the lettuce patches and asked if I could take his photo, he didn’t miss a beat.

“You gonna give me six bucks?” he asked in a heavy Jamaican patois.

“If that’s what you need,” I said.

His co-workers scoffed and mumbled that it was shameful of him to ask me for money. Of course I could take their pictures.

“What’s your name?” I asked

“My name is Nicolas, but you can call me Mr. Bond.”

And so I did. I trudged back to my car and returned three minutes later with the agreed upon six dollars, which he quickly pocketed.

Now his friends tittered that it wasn’t fair–why was I paying him?

“Because he asked,” I said.
