Our Road

Our Road, originally uploaded by elefanterosado.

This is the road I live on. When the realtor first took us out to look at our house (then barely a 500 square foot cabin) we got lost. Our realtor is from Brattleboro, but 30 miles in this country is a long ways away. I realize now that she took us the long way around, all the way down Route 5 and M.B. Road, because she didn’t have the benefit of knowing the secret shortcuts that the 40 year dwellers of these parts are more then happy to share with us newbie flatlanders. After we’d driven past the turn to this road, making a crazy pretzel loop back and forth a half dozen times, an Old Vermonter in a beat-up Chevy politely stopped, rolled down his window, and asked us where we were headed. We told him. “Okay, well you know Horn Corner where that red barn used to be before that drunk son of a gun run through it and then kept a driving that-a-way until he ended up skunk-assed upside down & parked up in that tree over yonder? Well, you should’ve turned there.” I swear to God, I’m not making this up. 🙂
