My Back Yard

My Back Yard, originally uploaded by elefanterosado.

I’ve travelled to more than 25 countries, several of which were ruggedly breathtaking, but I’m still often struck with wonder by the beauty of my own backyard. Close to my house in Southern Vermont, four cords of wood await the onset of winter, which, judging by the early and spectacular fall we’re having, could well be imminent. In the foreground of this photo is our goat and pony barn, which was originally a dilapidated outbuilding thrown up by the previous property owner. He was an odd duck who enjoyed flouting every rule and building code set out by our fair town, which, legend has it, he hated. For that reason our hay barn, which he used as a half-way house machinist’s shop, conforms to nary a set-back or building code. But he got away with it. This is Vermont, after all.
